How to set a S.M.A.R.T goal for your job search?

Goal setting is a critical foundation for a successful career. Whether you are a fresh graduate or currently seeking for a new chapter of your career, starting a job-hunting blindly can take longer time and may not serve you well. A statement such as 'I want to get a job' isn't enough. Job setting goal should be more than just having inspirations, instead, your goal should be SMART and clearly reflects different aspects of your career goal. Follow this S.M.A.R.T goal concept to make sure your plan is in a way you want to achieve. S.M.A.R.T is an acronym that stands for:

1.S-Specific

Make sure the goal can be as detailed as possible. The specific it is, the better guidance you have. Ask yourself:

' What is your main objective?'

'What industry you want to work in?'

' Is there a specific company that you want to apply?' ' What type of role you want to apply?'

Example: Instead of saying ' I want to be a manager' you might say, ' I want to apply for a position of marketing manager at Hublog Company because I believe that it's a great opportunity to expand my knowledge and contribute to a betterment of the company'.

2.M-Measurable

Establishing key performance indicators for each of your goals, consider what indicates your succeed? Setting milestones along the way will keep you motivated and provide you with the opportunity to evaluate your performance.

Example: quantifying your goal such as 'By the end of this week, I will send out 5 applications for my targeted jobs and will continually searching for manager role job'.  

3.A-Achievable

Your goal should be realistic and attainable. It should be challenging enough to push you forward but you also can accomplish it. Take into account your abilities and other external factors that are out of your control, like the current labour market.

Example: ' I currently have knowledge and skills to get a job as a Marketing Manager at Hublog Company and will apply today.'

4.R- Relevant

When establishing a goal for yourself, aligning with your personal values. This is when you connect your short-term goals toward your broader objectives. Ensure the goal is matter to you by asking yourself whether this goal is relevant to your personal and overall career objective.

5.T- Timely

When you set a timeline for your goal, you are more likely to commit to it. Having a time frame will establish a sense of urgency and push your efforts toward the completion of the goal.

Example: Make your daily schedule and commit to follow it ('from 8 am to 10 am, I will be searching for Marketing job').

Overall, setting a goal isn't easy; it's like choosing a destination on a map. To be able to succeed, you need to specifically brainstorm your way to the destination.
