In the current 'global economic crisis' you may hear the terms 'Head count freeze, redundancy, downsizing and more'. So the question on everyone's mind recently is, how do I get a job in my area of expertise?!
More than ever we now have a large pool of applicants, ranging from the graduates to senior levels. The key is taking advantage of this down turn and to create your own positives to ensure you are 'top of mind' for the next great opening.
Social networking - Nearly everything today revolves around web based social networking. Get involved in LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, more and more job seekers, employers and recruiters are joining networks to secure the ideal candidate. Join in on groups of your area of expertise, create your own profile and get involved! These networks are designed and created for those who are in the same industry as you! So take advantage of a free service, network with people in the same industry, get your name out there! The more active you are the more you will get noticed!
Volunteer work - Offer your skills and expertise. For graduates this is an ideal way to gain that valuable and precious 'experience in your field' that is always the 'brick wall' from getting your first job within the industry you are after! For those out of a job, it will keep your skills sharp and current. In this environment where unemployment is predicted to only get higher, volunteer work makes you look good, it shows initiative and gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, gain more experience and makes you more marketable!
Update your CV - I cannot stress how important it is to have a great CV. Why? Simply because more than ever, you will now be competing with a greater number of applicants. When employers look at 20 plus CVs for a single job it's the eye catching and outstanding CVs they will shortlist. Ensure you cover all your strengths, technical and non-technical skills. Tailor it to the job requirements. These are small tips that will get your CV noticed above the rest!
Persistence - Keep trying, keep asking and keep applying! This means keep in touch on the social networking, offer your services and do volunteer work. You never know where this may lead. Most importantly being persistent will ensure you are 'top of mind' when that employer is hiring again. As the saying goes, 'Persistence pays off'!
