Talking about salary or money in a job interview is quite a tricky subject. When you are at a job interview you want to impress your potential employer and do your best to convince them you are the right candidate for the job. However, when money is bought up in the conversation a lot of people do not know how to react, how much they should ask for or even how they should approach the situation.
It is important to remember that one inappropriate question about salary can ruin your chances, and unfortunately this cannot be reversed once it is done. The discussion of salary has a time and place and will be spoken about at one stage or another in your interview process however it should not be discussed or bought up straight away by the candidate.
The best time to discuss salary in a job interview situation is when you believe that you personally have a high chance of acquiring the job. If your interviewer seems impressed with you and has been talking to you about possible starting dates it would probably be an appropriate time to discuss salary.
Furthermore, it is important that you are aware that in your first initial interview the employer is getting to know you. They are deciding if you would be a good fit for the company as well as whether you possess the skills needed to get the job done. No matter how you think the interview is going, do not discuss salary unless it is mentioned by the employer as it could cast you in a negative light in the employers eyes which may cost you the job.
